This past weekend (June 14-16), I had the privilege of serving as faculty for the inaugural Ventana Sierra Advanced Writing Workshop, in Carson City, Nevada.
I loved every second of it—sharing my thoughts on craft, meeting new writers, reconnecting with folks I adore—and more than that, I came away inspired by the workshop’s ultimate goal of supporting the Ventana Sierra organization.
In the words of the organization’s website, “Ventana Sierra Inc., a 501(c)(3) charitable organization founded by NY Times bestselling author ELLEN HOPKINS, provides housing and resources that allow youth in need to further their education toward career goals.”
In short, Ellen and all of the other committed individuals involved in this organization work to help at-risk kids, many who have aged out of the foster care system, to have a sense of stability, support, and the training they need to succeed. They do so by setting them up in a shared residential environment and providing both ample resources and ample supervision.
I’m so lucky to know so many amazing people who find ways to give back and to extend a helping hand. If you’d like to learn more about the organization, check out their website and consider donating to this truly worthy cause.
As with my post on Bess the Book Bus, I’m happy to match any donations up to $50 with a discount off of any of our workshops or editorial services. Just send proof of donation to firstname.lastname@example.org.
And if you’re inspired by an organization, charity or individual, especially one related to the arts, please do share info about them in the comments section!
